CAR OF THE MONTH
September, 2006
1949 TRIUMPH
2000 ROADSTER
When I left school in July 1949 my dream cars were the Triumph 2000, the
Austin A90 Atlantic and the Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane but being only
15 years old and ‘brassic lint’ (skint, broke , no funds)
I could only dream. Over the years we had many different cars but never
any of the ‘dream’ cars.
In 1965 we emigrated to Canada and in 1969 bought a 1926 Chev Touring
which I rebuilt. Then in 1973 we returned to England for a 6 week holiday,
so in anticipation I placed an ‘wanted ad’ in the Motor Sport
magazine for a Triumph 2000 to which I received lots of replies but not
for a 2000. Then whilst on holiday we decided to go to the Isle of Man
to watch the Motorcycle TT races and over there bought a ‘Motor
Sport’ magazine. There in the classifieds was advertised a Triumph
2000 Roadster. The car was located in Yorkshire not too far from where
we used to live. A phone call was made and an appointment to view was
agreed. The gentleman was a farmer and he had 2 parts cars along with
my dream car. I promptly bought the car and also bought a 1966 Hillman
Minx for £85. We drove over 1000 miles in the 2000 and added many
miles on the Minx speedo which was used for our general transportation
while on holiday and subsequently donated to a relative on our departure
back to Canada
Arrangements were made and the Triumph was driven to London for shipment
back to Canada. The car left Tilbury and then via Hamburg travelled through
the Panama Canal to Los Angeles, San Fransisco and eventually to Vancouver
from where the ‘Dream’ was collected. That was in 1973 so
the car has been with us now for 33 years – part of the family really
!!
Over the years we have been to many of the all British shows in Portland
Oregon and have won about 40 trophies there, probably because it was the
only one that ever turned up ( there was one time when another one appeared
but it is the only other one that we have seen here). We always got Peoples
Choice and First in Class again being the only one in these classes.
The rag top has only been up about 7 times in all those years and the
resolve remains to drive the car with top down as much as possible.
Over the years many people have offered to buy the car but after waiting
24 years since leaving school with that ‘dream’ the car is
definitely ‘NOT FOR SALE’
As an aside, when we first went to look at the car back in 1973 the ‘other
half’ (trouble and strife, her indoors) said ‘why don’t
you buy something decent?’ – well after all these years we’ve
owned it - I think we did.
