Fall Classic Rally

Fall Classic Rally

Sunday, October 25

As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and as a result, the annual Fall Classic Rally for the Faryon Cup was another great success. Event Coordinator’s Sue and Robin Patterson were joined by Susan Chapple in the planning process for this year’s event. Apparently the route was surveyed no less than five times! On the day, frequent previous winners Tom and Cheryl Rivers and Glen Fraser assisted at checkpoints along the way (all the better to give others a chance at the big prize). David Bradley was the official photographer for the day.

The organizers were also able to arrange suitable weather for the afternoon, encouraging nearly two dozen teams to arrive at the Hamsterly Beach starting point.

And at the start, a four page set of directions, also containing 29 questions, was supplied to navigators. The start was staggered, with departure times being noted. But before leaving the parking lot, a test was put to drivers — how close could they place their vehicle to a parking pylon without knocking it over. Results were mixed.

10th Annual Restoration Fair & Swap Meet

10th Annual Restoration Fair & Swap Meet

Sunday, April 12

It might not have occurred to Robert Atkins that the Restoration Fair and Swap Meet he proposed and then organized for the first time in 1996 would grow to the extent that it has. From “almost 300 people through the gate and about 70 English cars on display” it has developed over the years as an important start to the old car season on lower Vancouver Island.

This year, due to the weather, attendance was down somewhat, but an afternoon shower did not deter those who came out and there seemed no rush for many to leave when 3:00pm rolled around.

This year we had 744 people through the gate and approximately 163 English vehicles on display, including a good number of motor bikes.

A new feature this year was the setup of the public address system on the field, with the equipment mounted on the back of a Commer flat deck. This proved to be a success, particularly with the added feature of a new MC in the person of Susan Patterson. Many thanks go to various club members who helped over the weekend.

A full crew was available on Saturday for the setup of the Fair. Many others turned out early on Sunday to help organize the parking, both on the show field and in the public parking areas. Members were busy at the gate all day long and a large group helped with the cleanup at the end of the day. Thank you to all!

Father's Day All British Car Picnic

Father's Day All British Car Picnic

Beacon Hill Park, Victoria
Sunday, June 21

Once again organizers Bruce Cornfield and Jim Walters put on the eagerly anticipated Father’s Day Picnic at Beacon Hill Park. And as always it was a relaxed day (no set arrival or departure times) in the company of others with English vehicles of all sorts, and hundreds of visitors from far and wide.

As always, there were some unusual cars to be admired. A freshly restored Aston Martin, a GTM and a certain DeLorean attracted much interest during the day. And of course, “My Dad/Uncle/I had one of these” was commonly heard.
From the Ashton Museum came a Daimler Ferret armed car, which made quite a sight on the city streets with the commander sitting up in the turret, waving at other motorists along the way. Motorbikes seemed a little scarce this year, although fine examples of Triumph and Norton were seen.

Once again, our thanks to Bruce and Jim (both honorary members of the South Island Branch of the OECC) for once again putting on this popular show. We hope it will long continue!
